From Church Service Planner to Church Planner

Back at the beginning of 2020, as the COVID pandemic swept across the globe, churches found themselves subject to lockdown rules. For most this meant in-person meetings were suspended. Churches struggled to adapt to online meetings. Older and less tech-savvy church members found themselves isolated.

Church Service Planner was my attempt to help ease the burden on church leaders and make it easy for church members to share pre-recorded sermons, music, Bible readings and reflections online.

Church leaders around the UK began using the tool and I worked quickly to develop new features. These included a booking tool to enable churches to manage seating plans, working within the ‘bubbling’ legislation.

I had never expected Church Service Planner to take off in the way it did. None of us could have anticipated how the pandemic would impact our meeting together. I’m sure none of us would want to re-live those days.

In 2021 I found myself starting a new job, working internally with one of my long-term website clients. I no longer had the time to devote to the development of the tool, but this coincided with the end of lockdown legislation. Most church congregations were thankful to be able to return to in-person meetings and the reliance on digital tools reduced.

Fast forward to 2024. I returned to freelance web development work in the spring, establishing Hello Technology. I was also welcomed into eldership at our church, Grace Community Church, Loftus. I’ve had more time to dedicate to software development, as well as first-hand experience of helping lead a small church congregation.
